Unlike static commissions, these fees fluctuate based on the prevailing market conditions, specifically the balance between long and short positions. The central factor determining who pays the funding fee and who receives it is **Open Interest (OI)**. Open Interest refers to the total value or size of currently open trading positions in a given market. For the purpose of funding fees, we look at two distinct types: 1. **Long Open Interest:** The total size of all open long positions (traders betting the price will increase). 2. **Short Open Interest:** The total size of all open short positions (traders betting the price will decrease). The fundamental rule governing funding fees is straightforward: **The side of the market with the larger total open interest pays a fee to the side with the smaller total open interest.** This mechanism creates a transfer of funds between traders holding opposing positions, driven by the imbalance in market sentiment or positioning.
